The National Institute for Defense Health Cooperation (NIDHC) maintains a comprehensive training curriculum designed to serve stakeholders across the DoW Global Health Engagement enterprise. Through a blend of virtual and in-person instruction, NIDHC provides specialized coursework to:

  • Enhance readiness by preparing implementers, practitioners, and leaders across the Joint Force to support Combatant Command  strategic goals through effective health-related operations, activities, and investments
  • Demonstrate strategic value by increasing institutional awareness of Global Health Engagement’s critical role in achieving national security objectives.
  • Foster synchronization by empowering greater coordination and alignment among DoW components, interagency planners, and international allies.

Our curriculum is tailored for a professional audience, including DoW military and civilian personnel, allied and partner nation stakeholders, U.S. Government Interagency representatives, and members of the Non-Governmental Organizations and academic communities involved in defense-led international health initiatives.

The Global Health Engagement Training Continuum

The NIDHC Global Health Engagement Training Continuum is a tiered suite of courses designed to ensure mission readiness and effectiveness, directly informed by Service-defined competencies and requirements. This structured approach ensures that personnel at every level are equipped with the specific skills necessary to execute Global Health Engagement objectives. To meet the evolving needs of the Joint Force, these courses can be tailored and delivered upon request for Combatant Commands, Service Components, and individual units. Detailed information regarding course customization and scheduling can be found on the Request a GHE Course page.

INTRODUCTION TO DOW GLOBAL HEALTH ENGAGEMENT

This asynchronous online course is designed to familiarize deploying personnel with the strategic rationale, opportunities, challenges, and basic considerations of GHE OAIs. Module 1, “all-service”, explains the “why” of DoW GHE, while Modules 2-4, “all-medical”, focuses on the key elements to ensure all military medical personnel can effectively support DoW GHE missions, addressing opportunities, challenges, and basic considerations to achieve operational and tactical goals.

FUNDAMENTALS OF DOW GLOBAL HEALTH ENGAGEMENT (FOGHE)

USU NIDHC’s flagship course aims to enhance the readiness of U.S. military medical personnel to develop and implement DoW GHE OAIs at the tactical and operational levels. Participants gain a greater understanding of: 1) the strategic, operational, and civil-military considerations in DoW GHE; 2) the framework for establishing the context of a health engagement; and 3) the components of planning, executing, and evaluating DoW GHE activities. The course is provided virtually once per quarter, and in-person to support requests from Combatant Commands and Service Components.

GLOBAL HEALTH ENGAGEMENT OPERATIONS COURSE (GHEOC)

The Global Health Engagement Operations Course (GHEOC) is provided for GHE planners and leaders at the Combatant Command and Service Component levels at least twice annually to meet the Service training requests of GHE professionals, program managers and security cooperation planners. This course focuses on aligning GHE OAIs to Command Campaign Plans (CCPs), as well as program design, management, funding, monitoring, and evaluation.
