National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Pre- and Post-Crash Care Program

NIDHC advances national efforts to reduce motor vehicle crash fatalities by integrating clinical practice, emergency response, and public safety systems. Through this program, the Institute connects federal priorities with operational execution, strengthening prehospital care and emergency medical services (EMS) to improve survival outcomes.

This work reflects NIDHC’s role as a coordinating hub that aligns stakeholders across healthcare, public safety, and government. By linking research, policy, and field implementation, NIDHC helps translate evidence into scalable solutions that improve response at the point of injury and across the care continuum.

Current efforts focus on six active projects:

  • Support for State EMS systems development
  • Expansion of prehospital blood transfusion (PBT)
  • Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) traffic safety education
  • Stop the Bleed promotion and revision
  • Evaluation of post-crash care risk to fire services and EMS responders
  • Research and strategic support to strengthen 911’s role in highway safety

These projects demonstrate NIDHC’s ability to manage complex, multi-component initiatives while delivering measurable operational impact. Additional efforts are in development, with 6-8 new projects expected to launch in the next fiscal year, further expanding the program’s scope and reach.

Through this portfolio, NIDHC strengthens coordination across agencies, enhances responder capability, and builds a more integrated and effective national approach to post-crash care.
